Prone paddling is different from standup paddling most noticeably because you are laying down on your stomach or paddling on your knees instead of standing. Prone paddling is also 100% you, no paddle is used! Prone paddling is popular on the west coast, but isn't seen much over here on the east coast. That doesn't mean that it still isn't fun. Prone paddling is an excellent complement to your standup paddle training and will make you a more well rounded paddler. Prone paddling puts you closer to the waterline where you have to use your body to steer and read every little bump for the most optimal line.
Surfing on a prone paddleboard is one of the most fun things you can do out here on the east coast! Our small mushy waves are perfect for endless rides on a prone board and each wave you can successfully paddle into and ride out of will give you critical paddle knowledge you can take with you to other paddle disciplines like SUP racing and SUP surfing. Becoming proficient at knee paddling on a prone board will take your balance on SUP to the next level as well!
I truly cannot say enough good things about prone paddling. It is one of my favorite things to do here in Charleston and I would love to see more people get interested in it.
